Born as Seda'a Lyrhiri under the 2nd Umbral Moon, Fleance hails from Gridania. His mother, Seda, raised him in a traditional moon keeper tribe until he was 6, when his father Osha'li opted to parent him, citing the loneliness young Miqo'te boys face after aging out from their homes. He lived with his father, a lumberjack, for the rest of his childhood, adventuring out alongside him as he worked within the Black Shroud. Out of the necessities of both protection and food, he learnt the bow, and became familiar with certain aspects of botany.

From 16 he begins his training in the Twin Adders. Subsequently, at age 21 when the Seventh Umbral Calamity occurred, he was deployed upon the fields of Carteneau as a foot solider, though he remembers little from the battle. By 23 Fleance leads his own squadron, and on one such patrol of the Garlean Border, they are set upon by soldiers. Of his squad of 6, only 3 survive. Fleance is injured, with a scar across his nose and a puncture wound through his stomach, and maybe a few handfuls of debilitating trauma.

One of his surviving comrades blames him for their deaths. He becomes depressed, bitter and withdrawn, and returns to live and work with his father, retiring from the Twin Adders. Within these years he elects to take on his new name - Fleance - as not to bring shame upon his mother Seda. He does so upon meeting Cherry, a former friend who had embraced a new identity in Uld'ah. With time, alcohol and no small measure of repression, Fleance is able to let go of his resentment, but not his guilt, and begins to consider the life ahead of him.

Then, at age 26, he has a vision.

Following a bizarre collection of visions related to the battle upon the fields of Carteneau, Fleance takes it as a sign to once more carve his own path. He joins the Adventures Guild, and due to his refusal to take up archery once more, is directed towards Stillgade Fane. Here, he learns Conjury with guidance from brother E-Sumi-Yan and assists with the healing of the forest, familiar with its pains. Following yet more visions related to the Calamity, and the meeting of Yda and Paplymo, Fleance forges forward, aiding in the protection of the Twelveswood. This garners the attention of Kan-E-Seen, who knows of his past, and bids that he deliver a proposal against the Garleans to the other city states.

Citing his drive to help and fainting spells, Yda and Paplymo invite Fleance to join the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Unconvinced he hosts some special power but interested in an answer to his visions, and a more active role in bringing a stop to the Garleans, Fleance accepts. He vows to assist them in stopping the summoning of primals. One such attempt by the Amalj'aa is his first mission, and upon this he meets another adventurer - Damien, who is said to also posses the same visions as he. Though they do not get along initially, they find themselves as powerful allies when their plan goes array and they must free themselves and their company from the Amaljaa's prison. Together, they conquer Ifrit, though some of their fellow prisoners are driven mad by Tempering.

An encounter with Lahabrea and the Slyphs brings Noxia to the Scions. Shortly after, they are tasked wih defeating Titan, and Fleance and Damien must work together once more. However, upon returning to the Waking Sands, they discover a massacre has been carried out by Lahabrea. Fleance breaks down and flees to the Church of Saint Adama Landama alongside Damien. Later, they return to the Waking Sands to collect and bury the dead, and, having stained his hair with their blood, cuts it. He travels back to his father for a time, unsure if he should remain on this path.
